Using all eight slots

Your bank is not the thing that limits you. Eight slots is. A flipper with 30M in seven working slots beats a flipper with 60M in two, and the reason is that gold only earns while it is inside an offer.

Members get eight Grand Exchange slots and free players get three. Each slot holds one offer, buy or sell, and there is no way to buy more. That fixed number is the real shape of a flipping bank, and almost every capital decision in this track comes back to it.

Which resource is actually scarce

Two things can bind a flipper: gold and slots. Which one binds depends entirely on the size of the bank, and the answer flips somewhere in the tens of millions.

Below roughly 20M, gold binds. You can name a dozen items you would happily buy right now and you cannot afford them all. Every extra million goes straight to work, and the compounding lesson later in this track is mostly about this phase.

Above roughly 100M, slots bind. You have gold sitting in your bank because there is no eighth thing worth doing with it. Buy limits stop you from putting more into any one item, so more gold has to mean more items, and you have run out of places to put them. That is a completely different problem and it needs different items, not more effort.

The awkward middle is where most people live, and it is where the discipline pays. You have enough gold to fill several limits and not enough to be careless with any slot.

Pricing an idle slot

An empty slot feels free. It is not, and the way to see that is to divide your own results by the slots that produced them.

Open My Flips and look at the last week. Take your total profit after tax, divide by seven days, then divide by the number of slots you actually had working. That is what one slot earns you per day, measured on your own trading rather than on somebody else's claim.

Last week: 14.7M profit after tax, on an average of 6 slots in use.

Per day: 14.7M ÷ 7 = 2.1M.

Per slot per day: 2.1M ÷ 6 = 350,000 gp.

The two slots you left empty all week cost 4.9M gp, which is a third of everything you made.

That number is the price tag on every slot decision after this. When you leave a position parked for three days because you cannot face selling it, you are spending 350,000 gp a day on it, on top of whatever the price does. When you skip a small flip because 40,000 gp of profit is not worth the click, compare it with the alternative, which is that the slot earns nothing at all.

The idle offer is worse than the empty slot

An empty slot at least announces itself. A buy offer priced well under the market looks like work happening, and it is not. It occupies the slot, it ties up the gold behind it, and it does neither of those things productively.

This is the failure mode of the flipper who places eight optimistic buys and goes to bed. Seven of them are two percent under the bid, none of them fill, and in the morning there are eight untouched offers and a full bank. The slots were busy all night and the gold did nothing.

The fix is a time limit rather than a price. Give a buy offer a fixed window, and if it has not started filling in that window, either reprice it or take the slot back for something else. A slot has two states, not one. Working, meaning the offer is filling or will fill soon at the current market, and parked, meaning it is not. Count parked slots as empty when you plan, because that is what they are.

Buy limits set the ceiling per slot

You cannot decide how much gold goes in a slot on your own. The item decides, because the buy limit caps how many units you may buy in a rolling four hour window, and that multiplied by the price is the most a single slot can hold.

The spread across items is enormous. Here is what one full limit costs at recent prices.

Buy limit multiplied by the current buy price. Prices move, the shape does not.

Read that table as a menu of slot sizes. A 10M bank cannot fill a single mahogany plank limit, so planks are not a one slot decision for that player, they are the whole bank. A 300M bank cannot put more than 2.43M into nature runes no matter how good the spread looks, so cheap runes can never be more than a rounding error in that book.

The four hour clock matters as much as the number. The window starts at your first purchase of that item and resets completely four hours later, so a slot that fills its limit early is a slot you should move to a different item rather than leave sitting on a spent limit. There is no limit on selling, which is why sell offers can safely be left running.

Mixing fast and slow

Filling eight slots with the same kind of trade produces a book that is either always busy and thin, or always idle and hopeful. A mix works better, and the reason is that fast and slow positions fail at different times.

Fast slots

High volume, small margin, several rounds per day. Runes, common supplies, planks. These are the slots that produce the steady number in your ledger and give you gold back quickly enough to react to anything else.

Slow slots

Wider spreads on items that trade hundreds of times a day rather than millions. Gear, mid tier uniques, seasonal supplies. Each one earns more per completed flip and takes longer, sometimes days.

A workable default is roughly half fast, a third slow, and one or two slots deliberately kept free as working room. The free slots are not waste. They are what lets you take a good spread the moment it appears instead of first unwinding something else, and they absorb the sell leg when several buys fill at once.

A 30M bank across eight slots

Slots 1 to 4, fast. Four cheap high volume items at roughly 3M each: 12M deployed. These recycle a few times a day, so the same 12M does more work than its size suggests.

Slots 5 and 6, slow. Two mid priced items at around 7M each: 14M deployed, expected to take a day or two each.

Slot 7, sell side. Reserved for whatever the fast slots finish buying, so a filled buy never has to queue behind another buy.

Slot 8, free. Nothing in it. Roughly 4M held back in the bank.

Deployed: 26M of 30M, 87%. That last 13% is not laziness, it is the reason nothing gets stuck.

Now notice what happens if you try to run the same 30M as two positions of 15M. You need items whose limits can absorb 15M, which pushes you into slower, thinner territory, and one bad hold freezes half the bank. Spreading it out is not only about risk. It is about how often the gold comes back.

Three slots in free-to-play

Free players get three slots and can only trade free-to-play items, which changes the arithmetic rather than the principles.

With three slots, an idle one costs a third of your capacity, not an eighth, so the discipline has to be tighter. The usual split is two buys and one sell rather than a broad mix, and you cycle items rather than holding several at once. Cheap, high volume free-to-play staples suit this best because they come back quickly and let a single slot do several rounds a day.

It also means position sizing is simpler. If you can only hold three things, each one is a third of the bank by default, and the concentration lesson later in this track applies with more force. Our free-to-play guide goes into which items behave well under those constraints.

A routine that keeps them full

  1. Start with what came back. Collect finished offers first, so you know your real free gold before you plan anything.
  2. Clear parked offers next. Anything that has not moved inside its window gets repriced or cancelled. Do this before you look for new flips, or you will never do it.
  3. Refill fast slots. They are the ones that recycle, so they should be the ones that are never empty.
  4. Place at most one new slow position per session. Slow positions accumulate quietly and lock up more of the bank than you think.
  5. Leave the last slot alone. If you have filled seven, stop. The eighth is your response to whatever happens next.
  6. Log what you closed. The next lesson is about why this step is where most flippers' numbers quietly stop being true.

Run that loop for a week and check the slot number from earlier again. If it went up, the extra profit came from nothing more than fewer empty slots, which is the cheapest improvement available to a flipper. The Flip Finder and the Margins board exist to make the refill step take seconds rather than minutes, because the faster that step is, the less often a slot sits doing nothing.

Steps two and six are the ones that decay first, and both have a control behind them. Track every flip as you place it and My Flips becomes the list you read at the start of a session: eight rows, what is still open, what has been banked. That is the parked-offer sweep done for you, rather than a thing you intend to do and then skip because you would rather look for something new. With the RuneLite plugin linked to your account, your fills arrive there on their own, so the record stays accurate through a long session with slots turning over.

The fast and slow split is worth making visible too. Positions can be sorted into named portfolios, each carrying its own deployed capital and banked results, so the half-fast, third-slow shape this section recommends stops being a rule you remember and becomes two numbers you can check. If the slow portfolio has quietly grown to most of the bank, which is the usual drift, the portfolio totals say so before your free slot count does.

For the slow slots specifically, set a price alert at your sell target instead of checking on them. Each fires once, they are managed on the Alerts page, and the point is that a position measured in days should not be costing you attention every session. Attention is the scarcer resource of the two this lesson is about.
